研究小组在艾滋病毒和隐球菌性脑膜炎(一种大脑周围常见的真菌感染)患者中测试了一种新的口服抗真菌药物两性霉素制剂。隐球菌性脑膜炎是全世界艾滋病毒感染者中枢神经系统感染的最常见原因。传统的两性霉素B只能直接注射到静脉中，并且具有剧毒。新的脂质纳米晶体配方已在 EnACT 试验中进行了测试，可以口服且无毒。
一种口服两性霉素对几乎所有真菌都有效且无毒，听起来像是抗真菌药物的圣杯。虽然在其他真菌疾病中还需要进一步的临床试验，但 EnACT 试验为安全有效地治疗真菌疾病建立了概念证明。侵袭性真菌感染， 明尼苏达大学医学院和 M Health Fairview 的传染病医生兼教授 David Boulware 医学博士、公共卫生硕士说。Boulware 博士也是 EnACT 试验的高级研究员。
在这项随机试验中，141 名患有隐球菌性脑膜炎的 HIV 阳性患者接受了口服两性霉素联合口服氟胞嘧啶治疗。与静脉注射两性霉素 B 相比，这种组合在抗真菌活性、相似的生存率和较低的毒性方面对隐球菌性脑膜炎很有希望。
据统计，与静脉注射两性霉素 B 一周相比，使用 LNC 口服两性霉素 B 六周后发生的实验室异常情况较少。在先给予两次 IV 负荷剂量，然后再给予实验性口服两性霉素制剂的组中，90% 的参与者存活超过 4 个月，而85% 的人接受了一周标准静脉注射两性霉素。
