自考成绩的有效期，教育部曾经有过规定：单科成绩8年有效。意思是说，自考生如果在八年内没有获得所报考自考专业的毕业文凭的话，其超过八年期限的单科成绩就会作废，作废成绩的科目需要重新报考参加考试。

但是，自考单科成绩8年有效并不是硬性规定，教育部将将是否操作此规定的选择权给予了各省。由于各地的实际情况不同，有些省份最终选择了实行自考单科成绩8年有效的规定，而有些省份则没有实行。已经执行的省市有天津、黑龙江、陕西、江西、辽宁、河南。
